32 Tom Petty vs. 97 Mastodon

Tom Petty (and his Heartbreakers) have been making good-old American rock and roll since 1976. In spite of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction, platinum records, and collaborations with legends like Bob Dylan and Roy Orbison, Petty has seemed to stay true to his values, often fighting his record label for lower album prices and creative control.

Mastodon is one of the leaders of modern heavy metal. The band blends progressive metal with psychedelia but is never far from old-fashioned speed metal. Not many bands can stay credible while writing albums about ambitious subjects like astral travel, Rasputin, and “Moby Dick,” but Mastodon pulls if off. Plus, they have a song called Mother Puncher, and that’s just bad ass.
