57 Big Star vs. 72 The Cars

A battle of underappreciated bands.

Big Star is the grandfather of 80s alternative rock, blazing the path followed by R.E.M. and The Replacements. The latter even wrote a tribute to Big Star’s Alex Chilton. The 2010 deaths of Chilton and Andy Hummel  have bittersweetly increased the band’s profile.

The Cars were one of the pioneers of power pop. They came along during the punk and new wave rushes and released a string of hits. After breaking up, Ric Ocasek went on to produce many of the bands The Cars had influenced like Weezer, Fountains of Wayne, and Nada Surf.
