29 R.E.M. vs. 100 Cheap Trick

R.E.M. was one of the first popular “alternative” bands, gaining popularity in the 80s through college radio. They had their first hit in 1987 with “The One I Love” and followed that with several more. Despite drummer Bill Berry leaving in 1997, R.E.M. has continued making relevant music.

Cheap Trick was one of the originators of power pop. Their biggest success came when they toured Japan, where they induced hysteria, in 1978 and recorded “Cheap Trick at Budokan”. Cheap Trick continues to tour behind hits like “I Want You To Want Me” and “Surrender”.
