Van Halen may have been the ultimate ’80s band. Buoyed by Eddie Van Halen’s guitar heroics and singer David Lee Roth’s over-the-top antics, Van Halen both entertained and inspired. The band even managed to stay popular when Roth left the group and was replaced by Sammy Hagar, before he also split with the band. Nearly 20 years after he left, Roth is back with the band and a new album has been announced.
The Cure were one of the leaders of the goth rock genre in the late ’70s and early ’80s, mixing dark, morose content with pop sensibilities. Led by Robert Smith, the band was one of the few “alternative” bands of the 1980s to find commercial success, releasing a string of hits and having influence in music, culture and fashion. The Cure continues to record and draw thousands of fans on tour.
