18 Black Sabbath vs. 111 Liz Phair

Black Sabbath were one of the bands that originated heavy metal, using horror themes and Tommy Iommi’s downtuned guitars to add a dark feel to their music. They released a string of well-selling, influential records with Ozzy Osbourne as singer before he was fired from the band. Sabbath then recruited Ronnie James Dio for a few records before he left to form his own band. Ozzy went on to have huge success as a solo artist.

Liz Phair broke through the glass ceiling of male-dominated indie rock in 1993 with “Exile in Guyville,” a response of sorts to The Rolling Stones’ “Exile on Main St.” Her frank, sometimes explicit, lyrics about her relationships marked her as a significant female voice in music. Phair’s sound has moved in a more pop direction in recent years, alienating some fans, but she continues to draw attention each time she releases something new.
