47 Roy Orbison vs. 82 Neutral Milk Hotel

Roy Orbison was one of the great singer-songwriters of all time, combining dark, complex songs with his powerful voice. During the ’60s, he had 22 songs that charted in the Billboard Top 40. Orbison had a career resurgence in the 1980s thanks to David Lynch using “In Dreams” in his film “Blue Velvet” and Orbison’s involvement with The Traveling Wilburys. Sadly, Orbison died in 1988 as his career was rising again.

Jeff Mangum released only two full-length albums under the Neutral Milk Hotel moniker, but they have had widespread influence, particularly “In the Aeroplane Over The Sea.” That record, based partly on Anne Frank, has ended up on many greatest album lists and has influenced a number of bands. After a decade out of the spotlight, Mangum has recently been more public, even announcing a small tour.
